Summer is quickly approaching. I wanted to share an idea from an article by Karen Cicero from Parents Magazine regarding summer reading. These are some ways to encourage reading during the summer months. It can be difficult to find time during the summer for reading - these are some strategies to help families prevent the “summer slide”.
The term “summer slide” refers to the regression of reading skills from the end of one school year to the beginning of the next. When students do little to no reading over the summer, skills can regress. Even those students who do read can have the “summer slide” when comprehension is not challenged and books are too easy.
One way to prevent this is to continue the practice of reading 15 minutes a day. Remember to ask questions and to model your thinking when your child is struggling.
Try a different genre - nonfiction, graphic novels, or poetry. Try a different author or series.
I also suggest joining the Pontiac Public LIbrary Summer Reading Program. Checking out books and reading together is a great way to foster a love of reading.
